August 18, 2010 Atlanta Technical College Continuing Ed program featured in the AJC
WEOP partners with Atlanta Technical College
Program helps workers become independent contractors
By Laura Raines
For AJC Jobs
The Women’s Employment Opportunity Project (WEOP) has provided women with technology-based solutions, training and skills to help them find jobs for 11 years. With Georgia’s unemployment rate at about 10 percent, finding jobs is a challenge.
“What do you do when you can’t find a job and your unemployment funding runs out?” asked Antionette Ball, founder of WEOP. “You reinvent yourself as an independent contractor, freelancer or consultant. With jobs harder to come by, more job seekers need to learn how to work for themselves.”
Ball has discovered many resources, workshops and courses to help people start a business; most focused on writing a business plan and securing funding.
“Our clients didn’t necessarily need to start a business, but they needed to learn entrepreneurial skills and good business practices,” Ball said. “If they couldn’t find work, we wanted to empower them to make something happen for themselves.”

July 27, 2010 The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports on enrollment spike at ATC and TCSG
Georgia's technical colleges set enrollment record
Vanessa Lyons was working as a certified nursing assistant when her company went out of business in October 2009. She enrolled in the practical nursing program at Atlanta Technical College and plans to graduate in about 6 months.
"As a CNA I made enough to keep above water, but it wasn't enough to be successful," Lyons, 48, said. "I wanted a better career and wanted to improve my lifestyle. I want to be able to retire someday."
Jackson said growth among students like Lyons will eventually stabilize. But that won't happen for awhile as unemployment rates continue to increase and experts predict a slow economic recovery, he said.

July 26, 2010 The Atlanta Journal Constitution features ATC visual communications program

Visual communications program opens doors to multiple creative jobs
By Laura Raines
For AJC Jobs
When he was in high school in the 1980s, Anthony Randolph thought an arts career meant a job drawing, painting or sculpting. But teachers introduced him to other choices, such as drafting and architecture. At Indiana University his career options were expanded even more.
“I was majoring in architecture, but then I started getting into computing and taking design classes,” said Randolph, chair of the visual communications department at Atlanta Technical College. “I can remember when the department got its first Mac computer and everyone just ran to see it.”
Randolph switched his major to graphic design and his career choices really opened up. In 15 years in the graphic arts industry, he worked as a typographer, graphic designer, illustrator, Web designer, interactive designer, animator and graphic film technician.
Along the way he went to graduate school to study computer animation and visual effects. He worked for the U.S. Department of Defense, an Internet startup company, a digital animation company in San Francisco and Industrial Light & Magic, a division of Lucas film, Ltd. His film credits include “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Bourne Supremacy,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” and others.
Four years ago Randolph came to Atlanta Technical University to grow its visual communications program. “I had a lot of experience in this industry and I wanted to pass it on to a new generation,” he said.

June 14, 2010 Atlanta Daily World Article on the AIM Servant Leaders Awards

"The essence of servant leadership is love," former ambassador and civil rights icon Andrew Young told the 2010 Servant Leaders Awards Dinner attendees June 3 at Atlanta Technical College.
Young was the keynote speaker for the event that recognized three Atlanta leaders as part of the Atlanta Technical College Institute for Males Call to Action Conference. The three honorees were Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves, Providence Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Rev. Dr. Gerald Durley and NBA Hall of Fame Referee and ATC Advisory Board member Ken Hudson.
Young told the audience, which included several of the young men enrolled in the AIM program, that this initiative is the perfect opportunity for them to develop for the future.
"The Lord will help you make a way out of no way," Young said. "And if you're going in the right direction and doing the right thing, you're going to be all right."
He urged the young men to have faith in themselves, faith in the institution that is working with them and faith in God. He told them that they should strive not just to get a job but to start their own businesses.
AIM is a program of Atlanta Technical College designed to "inspire young men not only to succeed in their coursework, but also to make success a habit," according to ATC President Alvetta P. Thomas.
"We motivate them to graduate and to make lifelong learning a priority. We encourage them to excel in academics, in the workplace and in other dimensions of their lives."
Henry M. Carter, AIM project director, presented the young men, who were dressed in dark blue suits with gold ties, as they gave testimonies about AIM.
Speaking on behalf of the program were Japheth Hutchinson, who is also president of the Student Government Association, AIM graduate Marqui Lewis; and participant Anthony McDaniel.

June 8, 2010 Atlanta Tech’s Shameka Lockhart Reaches Top Four
in Statewide Competition

Shameka Lockhart, a marketing management student at Atlanta Technical College, has tied for second-runner up in the Technical College System of Georgia 2010 student of the year competition.
The award was announced during the TCSG’s annual GOAL award banquet at the Atlanta Hyatt Regency Hotel on May 27.
GOAL, the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership, recognizes the best of the best students from among this year’s record-breaking enrollment at the state’s 28 technical colleges.
“It’s a great achievement to be named one of the four best students in the Technical College System of Georgia,” said TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson. “Shameka is an outstanding student who excelled and earned her place as one of the regional finalists for this year’s student of the year award. I commend her strong effort and thank her for being such a fine representative for Atlanta Technical College.”
Shameka and her nominating instructor, Grant Harris, were introduced to the audience of 400 banquet attendees that included the TCSG leadership, college presidents and their staffs, and other dignitaries.
Judging for the GOAL award starts at the 28 technical colleges and one Board of Regents college with a technical division, then moves to the regional and state levels. In each step of the competition, the students are interviewed and judged on their academic accomplishments, leadership qualities, community involvement and future aspirations.
The competition for the award is intense, for not only is the winner named Georgia’s technical college student of the year, the student also gets the keys to a brand-new Chevrolet Cobalt, presented by Chevrolet and the Atlanta Chevrolet dealers, sponsors of the GOAL award program.
The 2010 state GOAL winner and student of the year is Brian Jones, a practical nursing student at North Georgia Technical College.

May 10, 2010 Atlanta Technical College staff member featured in Mother’s Day article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Whether flower is red or white, color signifies love of mom
Among the many decisions Marilyn Arrington will make as she readies for church this Mother’s Day morning — which lipstick to apply, which hat will look best — one will be more freighted than the rest.
Which flower, red or white?
If she follows tradition, Arrington will pin a white blossom to the bodice of her dress, the fragile petals conveying a heavy truth shared by many today: My mother is gone. But the memories are here.
It is a Mother’s Day custom born a century ago that for many people, endures. Those whose mothers are dead commemorate by wearing white flowers; those whose mothers are alive celebrate with buds of red.

May 4, 2010 Technical Colleges’ Spring Enrollment Climbs
Atlanta – Spring quarter enrollment in Georgia’s 28 technical colleges is up by 19% over the same time last year.
Initial numbers posted by the technical colleges indicate that the current spring enrollment of 107,269 students is 17,381 more than in the previous spring quarter of 2009, when 89,888 students attended classes on the TCSG campuses.
It also marks the third consecutive quarter of six-digit enrollment in the Technical College System of Georgia, which is a first for the system.
The TCSG colleges are on pace for close to a 20% overall enrollment increase in the current fiscal year ending on June 30. The system projects that the annual enrollment in FY 2010 will be in excess of 185,000 students, or about 30,000 more students than in the previous year.
Affordable tuition and world-class training that leads to an in-demand job in two years or less is increasingly attractive to both the younger, more traditional college students as well as older men and women seeking to learn new skills because they’re either under-employed or out of work entirely.
In fact, this spring quarter’s largest percentage increase was in the 40 and over age group, which rose by a third from 14,263 students in the spring of 2009 to the current 19,015 students.
The 25 and under age group, which accounts for about half of all TCSG students, grew by 11%.
TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson notes that the huge growth in enrollment continues to be fueled in large part by the effects of the recession, although the attraction of a technical college education is expected to remain strong even when the economy recovers.
“Georgia’s technical colleges offer low tuition and exceptional training in skills that are highly marketable and integral to the workforce needs of business and industry. We believe that the lasting value of a TCSG education will continue to draw more and more students to our campuses,” said Jackson.
TCSG tuition is currently $40 per credit hour but will be raised to $45 dollars beginning with the summer 2010 quarter. Since the majority of TCSG students use either the Georgia HOPE grant or the federal Pell grant (or both, depending on their need), most should see no additional out of pocket cost since the tuition increase will be covered by the grants.
Almost 90% of TCSG students utilize state and federal grants to help pay for their education. As a result, very few TCSG graduates leave college and enter the job market while saddled with a heavy student loan debt.
Georgia’s 28 technical colleges offer 600 programs that lead to in-demand jobs and careers. Almost 40% of all TCSG students are enrolled in healthcare programs, and thousands more are readying themselves for careers in areas ranging from aerospace, energy and the environment, and life sciences to more traditional trades like electronics, automotive technology and cosmetology.
Reporters and editors note: spreadsheets showing a individual college enrollment growth and student age groups is available online at: http://www.tcsg.edu/download/7day_&_age_report.pdf

March 04, 2010 Atlanta Technical College, Preparing Atlantans for the Green Jobs Championed by President Obama in Savannah Tuesday
March 4, 2010 – Savannah, Georgia - Yesterday, at Savannah Technical College, as President Barack Obama unveiled his $6 billion Homestar program to fund energy retrofits of American homes, Atlanta Technical College president Alvetta Peterman Thomas sat in the front row. Thomas’s presence was significant as she is a proponent of eco-sustainability in education.
Like the president, Thomas believes that expanding skilled trade education to include components on building energy efficient homes and structures will create jobs, strengthen the economy and position the U.S. as a leader in green-collar jobs innovation. Colleges such as Atlanta Technical College have upgraded their industrial curricula to prepare students to fill jobs in weatherization, green construction and solar energy retrofitting.
“It was an honor to join my colleagues at the president’s speech in Savannah,” said Thomas. “Our mission at Atlanta Technical College is to prepare students to meet the demands of business, industry and indeed, the community. As such, we have been working towards empowering Georgians to earn living wages in socially-responsible, eco-friendly industries. To hear president Obama underscore the need for green-jobs training Tuesday was truly encouraging.”
If approved by Congress, the president’s Homestar initiative will revitalize the slumping construction industry and save homeowners money, as their properties become more energy efficient. Under president Obama’s plan, homeowners could get up to $3,000 in rebates from contractors and retail stores when they retrofit their homes to become more energy efficient. According to the White House, two to three million homeowners may take advantage of the program.
On a local level, this program will immediately benefit contractors like the ones graduating from Atlanta Technical College’s plumbing, HVAC and construction supervisory management programs. Through the silver star component of the president’s plan, these workers will be hired to perform simple but much needed upgrades to local homes, installing energy efficient water heaters, heating and air systems, duct sealing and new insulation. Contractors can also sit for gold level accreditation from the Building Performance Institute, which will qualify them to perform whole-house energy audits and improvements. Certified contracting crews could see an additional 250 retrofitting projects per year.

The Institute for Males Celebrates One Year At Atlanta Technical College

Atlanta Technical College has a strong tradition of providing metro Atlanta residents with educational outcomes designed to enhance career opportunities. However, it had become increasingly evident over the past several of years that the unemployment and underemployment rates among men of color were skyrocketing out of control. To combat this disturbing trend the college used a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and Postsecondary Education to launch the Atlanta Technical College Institute for Males (AIM) in February 2009. Today, AIM is celebrating a year of milestones and changing lives, impacting more than 1,000 high school aged and adult males.
The mission of AIM is to increase the enrollment, retention, graduation, and job placement rates of males at Atlanta Technical College. The program addresses recidivism, improves educational outcomes of post secondary education, increases exposure to cultural experiences, and fosters an environment of civic engagement. Most importantly, the staff provides emotional, intellectual, and financial support to participants.
Henry Carter, AIM program director, shares his philosophy regarding the role of AIM, “There is no ‘perfect’ solution (to society’s challenges), but programs such as the AIM program at ATC are an important step in the right direction. Through the program, we’ve had an opportunity to really connect with these amazing and inspiring young men, who are so appreciative of someone taking the time to nurture them and invest in their future.”
Over the past year, AIM has sponsored a summer leadership camp for high school students, conducted personal and professional development workshops on the Atlanta Tech campus and launched leadership academies at four Atlanta-area high schools. The group has also led empowerment programs for inmates at the Fulton County Jail. Recently, AIM employees directed community work sessions on improving educational outcomes for black men, at the Fulton County Summit on African American Males.
AIM proponents believe that the program has witnessed so much success in just one year because the counselors and staff are committed to developing well-rounded, productive men. The organization addresses both the internal and external factors that impact the behavior, psyche and self-esteem of young men. AIM has had an impressive year one and is seeking new program participants, community partners and funders to help move the program forward in year two. For more information on the Atlanta Technical College Institute for Males, contact Henry Carter at 404-756-2709 or hcarter@atlantatech.edu.

Ga. technical colleges continue enrollment spike
Visit web site
The recession is working for Georgia's technical schools, which continue to set record enrollments as adults return to school
seeking new skills and careers.
The Technical College System of Georgia has 109,548 students taking courses this winter -- the system's largest winter attendance.
It's an increase of about 26 percent -- or more than 22,000 students -- from last winter.
The gains follow enrollment increases recorded during the fall and summer quarters as laid-off workers and underemployed adults
try to reboot their careers.
Commissioner Ron Jackson said technical colleges are "the education resource for anyone who wants to gain the kinds of skills and knowledge that result in great careers, even in today’s difficult economy."
Why technical college?
Students can get new skills in high-demand fields without spending a lot of money, said Alvetta Thomas, president of Atlanta Technical College. That campus increased enrollment by about 43 percent to 4,851 students.
Certificate programs run from 10 weeks to 14 months and diploma programs take between one to two years, depending on the area. Tuition typically costs about $2,400 a year, with much paid through federal grants and state programs, such as the HOPE grant.
Thomas said the schools successfully find students jobs. Atlanta Tech boasts a 98 percent job placement rate -- slightly higher than the 94 percent for the entire system.
What are students studying?
The 28 campuses offer about 600 programs, but about 40 percent of all students are enrolled in health care programs, according to system figures. Other popular subjects include business, computer information systems and areas such as welding, plumbing and heating, ventilating and air conditioning.
Nursing, other health care fields and blue-collar fields, such as plumbers and welders, are projected to see increases in jobs, according to estimates by the state Labor Department’s Workforce Information and Analysis Division.
Students are looking for careers that are recession-proof, Thomas said.
"Plumbers will still be needed and people will pay to get their heat fixed," she said. "People are also looking for careers that will allow them to run their own businesses."
When will the growth end?
The current growth is a sharp turn from the declines the system experienced between fiscal years 2004 and 2007 when enrollments dropped between 1.5 to 2.5 percent.
While much of the current increase is attributed to the economy, the system changed its name in 2006 and has improved marketing and recruiting efforts.
The system expects next quarter's enrollment figures to be about 20 percent higher than the previous year, spokesman Mike Light said. Projections show the system will teach about 185,000 students this fiscal year, compared to 156,000 during the 2009 fiscal year, he said.
"We don't know when it will level off," Light said. "The economy is the wild card."
Staff writer Michael E. Kanell contributed to this report.

August 10, 2009 PREPARING TEENS FOR THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY: ATLANTA’S YOUTH EARN THEIR CERTIFICATIONS WHILE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL
Youth Program Aimed at Training Youth for Jobs in the Healthcare Industry and Employing them within the Community.
Sadie G. Mays is a Health and Rehabilitation Center located in the heart of Atlanta. The facility, primarily
serving long-term patients who require 24-hour skilled nursing care, is a typical nursing home, providing services
to approximately 200 seniors. What stands out about this facility is the number of teenagers dressed in medical scrubs
who walk the corridors.
These teens are participants in the Mayor’s Youth Program (MYP), an initiative started in 2005 by Atlanta Mayor
Shirley Franklin, to assist Atlanta Public School students to create and activate a plan to pursue post-secondary
education and/or workforce training. Participants in the program receive training in their preferred occupation
through summer internships and training opportunities. In 2009, funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act made it possible for the Mayor’s Youth Program to place over 1,500 students in workforce training and employment
opportunities throughout the city.
The Healthcare Program, in partnership with Atlanta Technical College, provides teens with a paid-training
opportunity to become Certified Nursing Assistants, Patient Care Technicians and Pharmacy Technicians.
Students earn college credits for their coursework and are provided a weekly stipend. During the nine-week
course, students complete clinicals at area healthcare facilities, working with industry professionals to
gain hands-on training and enhance their customer service skills.
“The clinicals are very informative and help students become accustomed to working in a nursing home and
caring for people,” said Brishawn Ballenger. Brishawn, 18, participated in the healthcare program in 2008,
prior to her senior year at Benjamin E. Mays High School, where she earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.
Abyria McCrary,17, will earn her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, before finishing her
senior year at Maynard Jackson High School in Atlanta. This summer has taught her the skill sets that
she will use throughout her career. “What I learned in this program is that it takes hard work and
dedication to achieve your goals. You don’t have time to be with your friends or go on vacations.
You have to study and practice hard.”
It is with that hard work and dedication that Abyria hopes to end up like Brishawn, who will likely
receive a job offer to become a full-time employee of the Sadie G. Mays Center. Brishawn used her CNA
certification to gain a summer internship at the center through the MYP’s 2009 Summer Internship Program.
Brishawn’s training and work-experience have made her an excellent candidate for the job. “The Mayor’s
Youth Program helped me get a job and gain experience on the job,” she said.
The Healthcare program provides an introduction to the medical field for students looking to pursue a
variety of careers. Ja’Cari Thomas, 18, a 2009 graduate of the New Schools at Carver High School in
Atlanta, is preparing to begin her first year of college at Tuskegee University. Her preferred major
is Wildlife and Biology and she wants to become a Veterinarian. She participated in this summer’s
healthcare program because she wanted more experience in the medical field. She hopes that her CNA
certification will allow her to work while in school and help to pay for her education. “I have been
saving the stipend money I earned during the program and will be using it for dorm room expenses and
college supplies,” she said.
The partnership with Atlanta Technical College also provided a training program in Air Conditioning.
On August 10th, all 49 students participating in training programs at Atlanta Technical College will
receive a certificate of completion during a graduation ceremony at the school. Thirty-students will
graduate from the Patient Care Assisting Program, nine from the Pharmacy Technician Program and eight
from the Air Conditioning Technician Program. Ten of those students plan to attend Atlanta Technical
College in the fall.

July 15, 2009 Clayton County High School Students Earn Health Care Certification Through Atlanta Technical College’s Dual Enrollment Program
Atlanta, GA – Six Clayton County students enrolled at the Perry Learning Center are now celebrating
their completion of the Atlanta Technical College’s Patient Care Assisting (PCA) program. While other
high school students are taking the summer off and relaxing, this highly-talented group of students has
taken the first steps towards laying the groundwork for a successful long-term career in the healthcare industry.
The Clayton County high school students are Christine Merisier and Angela Doby - Perry Center, Keyera Thomas,
Shanika Boyd, Keyona McElheney, and Yolanda Alfaro - Jonesboro High. They are six of more than 200 students
from metro Atlanta high schools who took advantage of the dual enrollment program.
As part of their dual enrollment in Patient Care Assisting at the Atlanta Technical College, the students
took 16 credit hours of coursework, including Nutrition and Diet Therapy, Medical Terminology and CNA
Fundamentals. To prepare students for careers in the medical and health care industry, patient care
assistants receive additional training that expands the traditional role of the nursing assistant.
Students have an opportunity to sit for the National Nurse Aide Assessment, which makes them more
desirable to hiring health care facilities because many employers prefer to hire prepared and
qualified nursing assistants.
“The Patient Care Assisting Program offered by the Atlanta Technical College is ideal for those
looking to get started in the healthcare industry as many of our students go on to advanced degrees
in practical or registered nursing,” said Juli Gilyard, High School Initiatives Coordinator,
Atlanta Technical College. “Our dual enrollment students have taken a series of very important
first steps towards a successful career post-graduation, and it is our hope that other students
follow this example by taking the initiative to enroll in similar programs.”
Following their completion of the certification program, the dual enrollment students
participated in the 2009 Atlanta Technical College graduation ceremony in June 2009,
and they are now preparing to take the state test to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Currently, healthcare is a very successful career field, in which, according to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), employment of assistants is expected to grow through the
year 2012 because of the technological advances in medicine as well as the growth of an aging population.
The dual enrollment program offers students the opportunity to earn both high school and
college credit for courses taken through Atlanta Technical College. Additionally, the
dual enrollment PCA program normally runs one high school year. Tuition and out of
pocket expenses are around $1500. For most students, the HOPE Grant can cover tuition and
defray the cost of books up to $100 per quarter.
Programs are offered both on the ATC campus or at the high school, and students may
take technical courses within a technical certificate of credit (TCC). To qualify,
students must be at least 16 years old, be classified as a junior or senior, and
have good academic and discipline records. For more information about dual
enrollment at the Atlanta Technical College, please contact Juli Gilyard at (404) 225-4427.

Disney College Selects Atlanta Technical College Student
For Internship Program
Atlanta – June 30, 2009 – Atlanta Technical College (ATC) early childhood education student,
Skyla Holmes, was selected to participate in the 2009 Disney College Program. The highly-regarded
internship will focus on a Disney-designed combination of education and work experience. Students
will learn about various forms of marketing, networking, management and problem solving – the Disney way!
Originally a substitute teacher at Easter Fields of North Georgia in Atlanta, Skyla wanted
to fulfill a desire to enhance her skills sets and began taking classes at the Atlanta Technical College.
“My recent promotion at Easter Fields is undoubtedly linked to the skill improvement I’ve
received at Atlanta Technical College,” said Skyla Holmes, student, Atlanta Technical College.
“My goal is to use each experience and each wonderful lesson to successfully complete my
internship with the Disney College Program. Ideally my example and hard work will shine a
great light on the candidate pool at ATC and open the door for many more of our students to
receive this opportunity in the future.”
Additionally, while attending the Atlanta Technical College, Skyla successfully ran for a
position as secretary of the Student Government Association. She also took advantage of the
HOPE® scholarship and other financial aid programs such as the Ivy and Rose and Bright from
the Start scholarship programs, which essentially covered 90 percent of her tuition and expenses.
Following her completion of the Disney College Program and graduating with an associate of
applied science degree in Early Childhood Care and Education from the Atlanta Technical
College in June, Skyla aspires to work as a youth counselor on one of the Disney Cruise lines.

January 22, 2009 Atlanta Tech Named Best Barber School in Atlanta

Barbershop Digest released its Best of 2008 list, a selection of products, services and businesses that were recognized for their excellence in the previous year. “We came across several people and organizations that we feel added to the barbershop experience as well as cultivating the culture that embodies barbershops,” said Barbershop Digest Editor-in-Chief Brian Egeston.
Atlanta Technical College was selected as the best barber school in Atlanta for 2008. “We had a chance to look at the curriculum for the barbering program at ATC and walk the halls and see the barbershop,” said Egeston. “Barbering students wear white smocks and neck ties the way Alonzo Herndon’s barbers did back in the day. With a ninety-nine-percent pass rate on the state barbering board exam, ATC’s staff is doing the right things to prepare students for a career in the industry...There are several organizations doing the same thing, but this group is doing it exceptionally well.”

December 10, 2008 Tuition Cap Raised
The state board of the Technical College System of Georgia voted last week to raise the technical colleges¹ tuition cap from 12 hours to 15 hours.
Now, Georgia residents taking between 13 and 15 credit hours will see the cost rise by as much as $108 for Winter Quarter .
Approximately 30% of Atlanta Tech students take between 13 and 15 credit hours, but almost all will see the extra cost covered by the HOPE Grant and/or the Pell Grant. Only a handful of Atlanta Tech students will incur the additional out-of-pocket expense.
The increase is expected to generate an extra $10 million annually for the technical college system. Despite the credit hour increase for some students, the cost of a Georgia technical college education remains among the lowest in the nation, and most of those costs are paid for under the Georgia HOPE and federal Pell grants.

July 24,
2008 Harris Named Teacher of the Year

Grant Harris, a
marketing instructor, has been named Teacher of the Year, the
highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member at Atlanta Technical
College.
Among his
many achievements at the college, Harris started the Delta Epsilon
Chi (DEX) Chapter on campus, and was recently named the state DEX
Advisor of the Year.
"Teaching at this level allows me the
opportunity to motivate my students to become everything they were
created to be," Harris says. "I believe each of us was made to be a
winner in life. Through my education, training, military service,
and life-changing experiences, I have learned invaluable lessons
about how to treat people. I now understand it and practice daily
the Golden Rule. Teaching students is one of the most fulfilling and
rewarding things I could ever do. It permits me to encourage my
students, and others, to diligently seek knowledge, truth, and
understanding from the classroom as well as from life’s experiences.
I firmly believe that education and life are all about “sowing and
reaping.” Accordingly, the basis of my teaching philosophy is that
everything we do should be done with excellence. As Aristotle
states: Excellence is a Habit. Therefore, when I see my students
grow in character, become confident and positive, dependable,

2007 Six Questions for Atlanta Tech's Teacher of the
Year
Karen
Wheel Carter, chair of the Paralegal Studies Program, has been
named Teacher of the Year at Atlanta Technical College. We
congratulate her on capturing the college’s highest teaching
award.
Who is your greatest inspiration? I am the sum total of my parents and their
parents, each of whom inspired me to pursue my dreams.
What is one of your favorite quotes? While I do not know the origins of this quote,
we all learned it at the knee of our maternal great grandfather,
"Once a task is first begun, never leave it till it’s done. Be the
labor great or small, do it well or not at all.”
What hobbies and activities do you enjoy
outside of work? Cooking, reading
mystery novels, travel.
What does it mean to
you to be named ATC's Teacher of the Year? It is an honor to be able to be the voice and
representative of the efforts of my peers. This is an honor and a
privilege to talk about what makes our work great and why we return
each day—it’s not the paycheck, it’s the reward and satisfaction of
seeing others succeed.
Why have you chosen to
teach and lead a program at Atlanta Tech? It allows me to combine two of my greatest
passions, my love for the law and higher education. Daily I see
lives transformed as my students prepare to enter the world of
work--some for the first time and others entering a new career.
Having worked in traditional educational systems, I have seen the
time it takes for students to transition from the learning
environment to the workforce.
What is your proudest
accomplishment at ATC? I am most proud
of how my students have risen to the occasion each time I have
called on them to participate in a special program, interview for an
internship or permanent job, or to serve as a student ambassador.
We’ve had two national competitive winners, four internships with
the Georgia General Assembly, two students enrolled in traditional
baccalaureate programs, one Student of the Year winner and state
finalist...Well, I could go on and on and on (smile).

2007 $3.2 Million Grant Funds Career
Academy
At a press conference held
yesterday, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle presented checks to fund five new
career academies and one existing career academy. Thanks to a $3.2
million grant from Cagle, Atlanta Tech will partner with the Fulton
County School System to create seamless educational opportunities at
the future Hapeville Charter Career Academy.
Career academies
partner local school systems with the state¹s technical colleges and
local businesses, enabling the development of high school and
college-level programs that train students for quality, in-demand
jobs. Students find that the academie's challenging, hands-on
programs provide greater relevancy and value which not only lead to
higher graduation rates, but also employment. The specified training
for students is attractive to area businesses and communities
prosper from the highly-trained and skilled local workforce.
Businesses have found that partnering with the Career Academies
provide a uniquely relevant and prepared workforce.
The Hapeville Charter
Career Academy will be a comprehensive high school where students
receive academic and career/technical education in a small school
environment, while earning college credits and certificates from
Atlanta Tech. Ninth grade students will begin in fall 2008 in
programs such as avionics and health occupations.
The Technical College
System of Georgia evaluated the career academy proposals then
decided upon the grants from the $16 million funded by the
legislature. A total of nineteen school systems applied, a point not
missed by Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron
Jackson when he noted that the high demand spoke to the great
potential and high importance of the career academy initiative.
"Each school system
saw the enormous benefit of creating a career academy in their
community, a fact made even more apparent by how hard each worked to
gain the funding," said Jackson.

2007 Commissioner Names Interim President for
Atlanta Technical College
Ron Jackson, the commissioner
of the Technical College System of Georgia, has named Dr. Josephine Reed-Taylor as the interim
president of Atlanta Technical College.
Reed-Taylor is currently the system's assistant
commissioner for adult literacy. She will take leave from that
position and guide Atlanta Tech until a successor is chosen to
replace Brenda Watts Jones, who passed away in August.
"Dr. Reed-Taylor is a
highly capable administrator who'll be a great leader for Atlanta
Tech during this interim period," said Jackson. "She will serve the
college and its students well by continuing the tradition of
education excellence that was the hallmark of the presidency of our
late friend and colleague, Brenda Watts Jones."
Later this week,
Jackson will name a presidential search committee made up of
business and community leaders from the Atlanta area. The
committee¹s job will be to screen and interview the applicants for
the president¹s job and then select their top three candidates. Each
of the finalists will interview with Jackson at the system¹s Atlanta
headquarters.
The
new Atlanta Tech president at will be installed after the
commissioner¹s selection is approved by the state board that
oversees the Technical College System of Georgia.
The entire process is
expected to take from four to six months.

2007 Atlanta Technical College is AMERICA'S BEST
COMMUNITY COLLEGE
As Atlanta Technical College
celebrates its fortieth anniversary and mourns the recent death of
its beloved president, there's a spectacular bit of news that all of
Atlanta can be proud of: Atlanta Technical College has been named
America¹s Best Community College by Washington Monthly.
Unlike the guidebooks
that rank four-year colleges, the Washington Monthly findings were
entirely based on measures with a research-proven link to student
success. The rankings were based on two sources: the Community
College Survey of Student Engagement and graduation rate statistics
compiled by the US Department of Education.
To read more:
This link will show the complete rankings and
explain the methodology behind them. The Washington Monthly article
also makes a passionate and data-driven case for the effectiveness
of community colleges compared to their better-known counterparts:
four-year colleges and universities.
"Being ranked number one means that there's
something uniquely different about the excellent quality of
education that's offered at Atlanta Technical College," says Ron
Jackson, commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia.
"Outstanding faculty and staff, sophisticated yet affordable
programs, and a relentless focus on student achievement means the
college¹s graduates are destined for career success. Being ranked as
number one is a testament to the vision and commitment of the
college's late president, Brenda Watts Jones, whose legacy of
excellence will continue for years to come. The entire Technical
College System of Georgia takes immense pride in congratulating
Atlanta Technical College on this well-deserved honor as the best
two-year college in the nation."

August 14,
2007 Atlanta Tech Mourns Loss of President Brenda
Watts Jones

Brenda Watts Jones,
president of Atlanta Technical College, passed away on Sunday,
August 12. As leader of the college since 1997, President Jones
inherited a struggling institution and transformed it into an
educational powerhouse. Her visionary leadership brought national
and international recognition to Atlanta Tech.
For more than twenty
years, President Jones was on the frontlines of higher education.
She was the first and only African-American female to lead a
technical college in Georgia. The Daphne, Alabama, native earned her
BA in sociology from Dillard University before completing graduate
work at Atlanta University and Georgia State University. She was
tapped to lead then-Atlanta Technical Institute in 1997. With a
budget of more than $24 million and a staff that numbers more than
350, Dr. Jones directed one of the fastest-growing and busiest
technical colleges in the state.
Ron Jackson, interim commissioner of the
Technical College System of Georgia, has issued the following
statement:
“I,
along with the entire Technical College System of Georgia, was
deeply saddened by the passing of Brenda Watts Jones. We offer our
condolences to her husband, Morris, her son, Brandon, her
stepchildren, Maurice, Marquis, Sheikla, Kaleisha, and their entire
extended family and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers. We
have lost a great colleague, an outstanding college president and a
good friend whose remarkable life and constant devotion to education
was an inspiration to us all. She will be remembered as a gifted
leader who molded Atlanta Technical College into a respected
institution and a national and international model for technical
education and workforce development. Her greatest legacy, though, is
every student whose life was magically touched by her belief in them
and her commitment to changing their lives through the power of
learning. Her colleagues, her community and, most of all, her
students, will miss her greatly.”
President Jones served on the boards of the
Metropolitan Atlanta Neighborhood Development Association; the
Fulton County Workforce Development Council; the City of Atlanta’s
Workforce Development Council; the RESA Board of Control; Good
Choices; Project GRAD; and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce
Board on Education, to name a few. She was also a graduate of
Leadership Atlanta and the Regional Leadership Institute. President
Jones was a member of the Coalition of One-Hundred Black Women.
The Concerned Black
Clergy of Atlanta and former Secretary of State Lewis Massey
recognized her for outstanding community service, leadership, and
vision. Michael Thurmond, commissioner of the Georgia Department of
Labor, named her an Outstanding Georgian, and the Atlanta Business
League cast her as one of Atlanta’s most influential women. Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., honored her as a Delta Diva and
Trailblazer of the Year. FOX-5 Atlanta also profiled her during
Black History Month as one of Atlanta’s preeminent educational
leaders.
But her
success didn’t stop there. Partnerships and programs expanded under
President Jones’ leadership. Atlanta Technical College now offers
more than eighty programs, including associate degree programs in
Accounting, Marketing, Early Childhood Care and Education, Computer
Information Systems, Hotel, Restaurant, & Tourism Management,
and Paralegal Studies. More associate degrees will be added later
this year.
These
accomplishments are no surprise considering President Jones’
remarkable tenure at ATC. In 1997, she launched Georgia’s first
technical college international exchange program with Felix
Fechenbach, a technical school in Germany. Plans are underway to
expand the exchange to technical colleges in London and Korea.
Atlanta Tech is the only technical college in the Southeast with an
ongoing international exchange program.
Always about business, Dr. Jones cultivated
strong ties with area companies and industry leaders. Among Atlanta
Tech’s many corporate partners are Delta Air Lines; AT&T; Fulton
County Public Schools; Atlanta Public Schools; the Hyatt Regency;
Georgia-Pacific; Kroger; Fulton County Housing Authority; the
Construction Education Foundation of Georgia; BMW of North America;
and various trade unions.
President Jones was an active member of Cascade
United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Morris; son,
Brandon; stepchildren Maurice, Marquis, Sheikla, and Kaleisha; her
mother, Rosetta Watts; her father and stepmother, Vodie and
Evangeline Watts; four sisters, Barbara Martin, Joan Royal, Karla
Mitchell, and Victoria Watts; her brothers, Vodie Watts, Jr., Vernon
Watts, and Terrence Watts; and two step-grandchildren.
Visitation Services
will be held on August 15 from 6 until 8pm at Williamson Mortuary.
Visitation is from 6-7pm and the service will begin at 7pm.
Williamson Mortuary 1410 Highway 138 Riverdale, Georgia 30296 770.907.8548
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday,
August 16 at 11am at Cascade United Methodist Church.
Cascade Church 3144
Cascade Road, SW Atlanta, Georgia 30311 404.691.5770
A service will also be held this weekend in Dr.
Jones’s hometown, Daphne, Alabama. In lieu
of flowers, you are invited to make a donation to the Brenda Watts
Jones Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to the
“Atlanta Technical College Foundation” and “Brenda Watts Jones
Scholarship” should be noted in the memo line on the check.
